Sandsfoot Castle was built by Henry VIII to defend the safe anchorage of Portland Harbour. In July 2009 a Tudor Picnic was held in this historic setting as one of the events in Spirit of the Sea the Weymouth and Portland Maritime Festival.
This year (2010) again during the Spirit of the Sea Festival a similar event will take place focused on the Elizabethan Age. There will be Elizabethan games to play, skittles and King’s Game to try, story telling for the younger children and a Mummers play to watch. Let ‘Sir Francis Drake’ guide you around Henry VIII’s Sandsfoot Castle and hear how the men of Weymouth, who fought under Sir Martin Frobisher, defeated the Spanish Armada.
